Description

The PhD Programme in Environmental Toxicology and Contamination is offered through the School of Medicine and Biomedicine (ICBAS), the Faculty of Sciences (FCUP) and the Faculty of Pharmacy (FFUP), with the participation of three research centres of excellence: Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR), Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde (i3S) and the Rede de Química e Tecnologia (REQUIMTE). Its duration is 4 years. The scientific/technologic productivity of excellence is promoted. Accreditation of academic, scientific or professional experience and competence is possible.

Objectives

The PhD program in Environmental Contamination and Toxicology offers advanced scientific and technological training to face major challenges at global level, mainly those resulting from global climate changes and human population growth (e.g. pollution, global warming, ocean health, water and environmental quality, emerging diseases, new energy sources, food safety and security, environmental sustainability, ecosystem services, new pharmaceuticals/materials/technologies…). It offers specific (e.g. ecology, toxicology, biotechnology…) and multidisciplinary training integrating environmental, animal and human health in line with the ‘One Health’ and ‘Global Health’ concepts.

Admission Requirements

Among other requirements, provided for in the Specific Regulation of the Doctoral Program in Animal Science, the inclusion of at least 1 (one) original article (full length paper) published or accepted for public examination is an absolute condition for submitting the thesis to public examinations. Publication in an indexed international journal (SCI), whose 1st author is a doctoral student.

Professional Opportunities

Scientific and technological research; Ocean and environmental policy and management; Risk assessment and management (medicines, chemical products, other environmental and health risks); Environmental Impact Assessment; Water treatment; Health; Biotechnology; Blue economy; Circular economy; Food safety and security; Fishery and aquaculture; Agriculture; Energy; Production of goods and services; Tourism; Residue management, transformation and recycling

Professional Abilities

Interdisciplinary advanced knowledge and training on Environmental Contamination and Toxicology and related areas will be provided, including the capability of recognise and characterise environmental problems and their effects on health; planning and implement research and/or action projects able to address and solve theoretical and applied situations; obtain, analyse and interpret data; assess and manage environmental risks and resources; communicate results and risks to different types of audience. It is also intended to develop the students’ capabilities of creativity, autonomous thinking and planning, search and update of information, critical analysis, scientific and technical maturity, dialogue with opponents, team working in a multidisciplinary, international and multicultural context. Special attention will be given to the development of the capability of intervention and decision-making in environmental issues, in distinct professional contexts.
