Description
The PhD in Veterinary Sciences aims to promote advanced training in the field of Veterinary Sciences through research. This program is designed to achieve levels of excellence. Offering a combination of a rigorous doctoral program with guidance by researchers associated with research institutions with merit at national and international level, in the different areas of basic and clinical sciences.
The Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar (ICBAS) is recognized among the organic units of the University of Porto for its multidisciplinary characteristics in the field of Life Sciences with particular emphasis on an educational, scientific and cultural project that presided over the formation of this institution. Having as priorities the promotion of fundamental and applied research activities, it stimulates the exchange of knowledge and experiences among its teachers and researchers from different areas of knowledge.
We believe that the characteristics of interdisciplinarity and attractive research opportunities have contributed to the creation of a pleasant and productive atmosphere that encourages students to acquire a high level of scientific quality.
The doctoral program consists of a 1st year with a curricular unit of annual nature, called “Probationary Year”. A scientific profile acquired on the basis of curricular units is normally compulsory, however. offered through modules or courses. The transfer of professional and scientific skills is carried out on a voluntary basis, through courses, classes and/or workshops designed for each particular candidate. The non-existence of fixed curricular units creates the possibility for the doctoral student to carry out a personalized initial training allowing the conciliation with other interests, as foreseen in an advanced training plan according to the Programme Directorate.
The curricular components of advanced training can be completed in a single semester or over the 2 semesters of the 1st year, up to a maximum limit of 30 credits. The remaining 30 credits of the “Probationary Year” unit necessarily include preparatory work (laboratory or other) to support the work leading to the doctoral thesis.
The remaining three years of the doctoral program, corresponding to 180 credits, are dedicated to the preparation of an original thesis, particularly designed for this purpose and appropriate to the profile of knowledge in the area of Veterinary Sciences.
Objectives
The doctoral program aims to provide advanced training in Molecular and Cellular Biology applied to Health Sciences, as well as to endow the students with transversal skills in the areas of intellectual property, technology transfer, entrepreneurship, ethics, writing and scientific communication and project development. In the teaching component, students benefit from formative flexibility, allowing them to adapt to each individual’s PhD project. Students must spend a minimum of 6 months in an international institution (laboratory, hospital or industry), outside Portugal.
Admission Requirements
Among other requirements, provided for in the Internal Regulations of the Doctoral Program in Veterinary Sciences, it is considered an absolute condition for submission of the thesis to public defense the inclusion in it of at least 1 original article (full length paper) published or accepted for publication in an indexed international journal, whose 1st author must be the doctoral student.
Fields of Specialization
The Program will focus especially on the scientific areas indicated below, encouraging the realization of interdisciplinary projects between two or more areas.
- Regenerative Medicine and Cell Therapies
- Nanodiagnosis and Nanotherapy
- Molecular and Cellular Biophysics and Computational Design of Biomolecules
- Microbial Biotechnology
